Workshops (subject to last minute changes)

SESSION ONE – 10AM to 11AM

*Adventures in Home Brewing (Jere)
Come learn about home brewing from a seasoned brewer.

About Jere: I brewed my first batch of beer on Christmas Day 1997.  This passion for brewing has led me to work for Mad River Brewery, which in turn has afforded me the opportunity to interact with the brewers from four other breweries.  Along the way I have been blessed with some measure of success, winning awards locally and around the state. Also, I have had several beers go to the final round of American Homebrewers Association National Competition.

*Basic CPR (Shannon)
Basic CPR - Everyone should know how to do CPR, it's easy and you could save
someone's life! Refresh your skills or learn the basics so you can help in an emergency.

About Shannon: Shannon got her first CPR card in 7th grade and is a certified lifeguard and
wilderness first responder, because she likes to be prepared.

*How to Make Pancakes from Scratch (Becky)
Becky will share 3 or 4 favorite buttermilk pancake recipes. Come ready to eat some!
Also, bring fruit or other pancake toppings!

About Becky: Becky has always loved cooking and baking, 'cuz she loves to eat.

*Backyard Composting (TC)
This workshop will cover various containers that can be used or put together in order to compost in your backyard using kitchen scraps, various lawn and garden cuttings and a minimum of materials that can be easily and cheaply acquired from the nearby community.

About TC: One of TC Golez's first memories is standing in the compost hole she and her brother were digging for her father's gardening business. In 1998 she completed the Quail Botanical Gardens' Master Composter training in San Diego.
She is wiggy about getting everyone to turn their kitchen waste into valuable compost.

*The electric car in your future (John)
Interested in electric cars? Want to know how to get one, what the costs will be, and what electric vehicles can and cannot do?  Come check out two different electric cars and learn about the electric car in your future.

About John: John has 15 years of experience with electric cars.

SESSION TWO – 11AM to NOON

*Psychic Skills and Meditation for Activists (Cindee)
Link your intuition and intellect to avoid burnout, prevent conflict and make connections across diverse attitudes.

About Cindee: Cindee Grace is a Doctor of Naturopathy and experienced psychic instructor. For info, call Cindee 269-7044.

*Starting a Small Business (Bob)
Want to begin a small business?  Want to know more about how to get started? Come and learn!

About Bob: Bob Schultz has run several successful businesses throughout California, including a Bar-B-Q in San Marcos and a breakfast/lunch shop in Escondido from 1985 to 1996, when he moved to Eureka, where he ran “Gas Stoves with Style” until 2006.

*Make Your Own Bread! (Juliet)
Learn to make your own bread: loaves, rolls, monkey bread, cinnamon roll – learn a recipe for all kinds of bread!

About Juliet: I have been baking for events with my mother since I was little, and will be using her bread recipe.

*Buying a House, Even When You Think You Can't (Fhyre)
The title says it all – buying a home can be more possible than you think! Come to this workshop to learn how.

About Fhyre: Fhyre is an accomplished activist, teacher, and fundraiser who has lots of experience helping others accomplish their goals.

*Preparing a Healthy Hookah (Jason)
Hookah is a social nexus.  Pleasurable vaporized molasses are inhaled as a safer alternative to harsh, often chemically-treated tobacco.  In this workshop, tobacco quality, bowl-packing technique, filtering liquid, pipe maintenance, and safety will be covered.

About Jason: I started smoking hookah on a blind date and evolved to being a hookah aficionado.

SESSION THREE – Noon to 1PM

*Simple Coptic Book-binding (Becky)
Becky will share the coptic book-binding stitch taught by the Book Arts Guild. Needles and materials for workshop provided, as well as handouts to take home.

About Becky: Becky is a member of North Redwoods Book Arts Guild and taught simple book-binding at the SkillShare in 2006.

*Tile Setting (Larry)
This workshop will cover domestic tile setting: sinks, tubs, floors, etc.

About Larry: Larry is smart, good looking, dynamic and has 30 years of professional experience in setting tile.

*Schlepping (Larry)
Want to learn how to move heavy or bulky objects easily and safely?  Come learn tricks of the trade that will save you both time and sore muscles.

About Larry: Larry has extensive experience working on trail and restoration crews throughout California, where has mastered the art of heavy lifting through regular practice on a wide array of objects, from boulders to lumber and more.

*Vegetarian Tamale Making (Kaitlin)
Participants will learn how to make tamales from scratch, starting with the corn masa shell to the yummy veggie filling. After we assemble the tamales we will steam them and eat them for lunch!

Kaitlin grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and learned to make tamales from her mother.

*Manifesting What You Want (Fhyre)
Do you have a dream? This workshop will help you strategize the actions you need to take and hold onto the positive attitude to make your goals reality.

About Fhyre: Fhyre is an accomplished activist, teacher, and fundraiser who has lots of experience helping others accomplish their goals.

LUNCH BREAK (Join us for tamales!) – 1PM to 2PM

SESSION FOUR – 2PM to 3PM

*How to get your letter in the paper (Kevin)
Tips and tricks from the editor of the Arcata Eye on writing effective and readable letters to the editor.

About Kevin: Kevin is the editor of the Arcata Eye and the author of the alliterative and entertaining Police Logs.

*Herbal First Aid (Lou)
Learn how to cure yourself from the ground, plants, and your kitchen.

About Lou: Lou was raised holistically, eating fresh from the garden, and practices herbal first aid in her own life today.

*How to make your own lip balm (Yvonne)
Basics of making homemade lip balm with recipes and samples.

About Yvonne: Yvonne enjoys making homemade gifts for each holiday, including balm, lotion, and body bars.

*All-Weather Bike Commuting (Chris)
Sure, it's fun to ride to work when it's sunny, but this is Humboldt County. Get real about commuting comfortably and safely in any weather!

About Chris: Chris is the Executive Director of GreenWheels, a community group dedicated to promoting alternative transportation in Humboldt County, and a former bike racer.

*Water Recycling (Bill)
Make the most of Humboldt's water to save money and the planet! We will cover water catchment and other home water recycling techniques.

About Bill: Bill is a handyman extraordinaire who taught at the 2006 SkillShare.

*Constructing with Cardboard (Jim) ONGOING, 2-5pm
Make baskets, containers, and other useful and sturdy things from cardboard, tape, and glue! Hands on fun.

About Jim: Jim has been using his cardboard-constructed guitar case for over 10 years. 'Nuff said.

SESSION FIVE – 3PM to 4PM

*Intro to Massage (Loren)
This will be a basic class with everyone receiving a little massage and practicing a little on each other.

About Loren: I have training from Heartwood Institute, Esalen Institute and Mpls School of Massage.

*Household Appliance Repair (Bill)
Household appliances and electronics made simple to help you take care of minor repairs at home.

About Bill: Bill is a handyman extraordinaire who taught at the 2006 SkillShare.

*Fix Yer Bike (Chris)
Basics of brakes, chains, and tires to keep your bike running and your wallet fat.

About Chris: Chris is the Executive Director of GreenWheels, a community group dedicated to promoting alternative transportation in Humboldt County, and a former bike racer.

*Creating with Cardboard (Jim)

*Facilitation: Techniques & Tips for Better Meetings (Kaitlin & Hannah)
Been to one too many boring meetings where you wonder why you came?Learn basic facilitation techniques, including how to come to decisions using the consensus process, how to deal with difficult people in a meeting, and how to bring a group to a decision. Also learn how to be a more effective meeting participant, even if you're not in the facilitation chair.

About Kaitlin and Hannah: Kaitlin and Hannah have facilitated lots of meetings and worked with lots of different kinds of groups and people. Their pet peeves are long, boring meetings where nothing gets accomplished.

*Vermiculture: Learn to Compost With Worms! (Kevin)
Learn how to make worms do the dirty work of composting your kitchen waste. Be prepared to get a little dirty and have a lot of fun!

About Kevin: Kevin is a local organic farmer who grows vegetables and has many years' experience with composting.

SESSION SIX – 4PM to 5PM

*Kundalini Yoga (Joan)
Kundalini Yoga is the Yoga of Awareness. Beginning with awareness of the breath, we will explore the movement of breath and prana, the life force, through a set of simple movements utilizing five different breathing techniques in addition to yogic long deep breathing.  This
Kundalini Yoga Kriya, the Pranayama Series will both energize and relax the participant and will end with a short meditation to open the Heart Center.

About Joan: I teach Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, to share the physical, emotional and spiritual well being I have experienced since I began practice six years ago and to provide people with tools to find their inner light and peace.

*Know Your Legal Rights (David)
Do you get nervous during a "routine" traffic stop?  Do you know what to say when questioned by a cop?  This workshop will provide a brief overview of the criminal justice system and help you to be prepared to assert your constitutional rights during police encounters.

About David: David practiced law for 10 years in Texas.

*Creating with Cardboard (Jim)

*Intro to Fertility Awareness (Bianca)
Participants will learn about the female reproductive system and the menstrual cycle and be introduced to Fertility Awareness (Natural Family Planning). We will cover how the method of charting can be used to determine when a woman is fertile, when she is not, and how to use the method to gauge reproductive health.

About Bianca: Bianca works as the assistant of Fertility Awareness teach and author Katie Singer (The Garden of Fertility and Honoring Our Cycles) and has been practicing Fertility Awareness for two years.

*Nutrition (Lou)
Basics on how to eat and live healthily – open discussion based on participants questions and interests.

About Lou: Lou was raised holistically, eating fresh from the garden, and practices herbal first aid in her own life today.

SESSION SIX – 5PM to 6PM

*Introduction to Knitting (Needle Exchange)
Join members of Needle Exchange to learn both knitting and crocheting skills.

The Needle Exchange meets weekly for conversation and supporting fiber arts.

*Democracy and Freedom In Schools (Dennis)
There will be sharing of my experience at Diablo Valley School in Concord, CA using the Sudbury model and literature. This egalitarian model's application for other institutions will be explored.

About Dennis: Dennis is an Arcata resident and was on the staff of a democratic and free school the last academic year. I believe in self-governance, maximizing our individual freedom and inclusiveness.

*Hand Sewing 101 (Hannah)
Hand sewing can help you keep your favorite clothes looking spiffy. Learn to thread a needle, sew a button firmly in place, and a couple basic stitches. Knowing basic sewing can save you money & make you more self-sufficient.

About Hannah: Hannah has been hand sewing since she was a wee lass, and has learned many techniques from experienced men & women along the way, from soccer moms to gutter punks. She enjoys hand sewing especially during the rainy winter months.

*Pasta from Scratch (Anthony)
Pasta from scratch is easy, cheap, and delicious! All you need are eggs, flour, water, salt and a little elbow grease.  Learn to make fettuccine in under an hour. No kitchen skills necessary.

About Anthony: Humboldt-raised and East-coast educated, Anthony is a college student who loves to cook and feed hungry people.

6PM to 7PM
