THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

Business Profile: Green Life Evolution Center

April/May 2007

Located in downtown Blue Lake, The Green Life Evolution Center is a community gathering place “dedicated to sustainability and conscious evolution.” Inside the store one will find a plethora of culinary goodness with their 100% organic, raw vegan café. Green Life also contains a full market with bulk foods, produce, vitamins, herbs, spices and nuts. The proprietors also offer the space for meetings, artists, music and family.

Roy Buchanon has been involved from the beginning and now runs the Center. He shares with us their work and vision, “Green Life was created to help promote community and a new paradigm. We wanted to make a peaceful alternative to the isolation that many of us feel. We wanted to create a space where people can come together and feel connected… sharing the skills and blessings that we all have to offer.”

In Green Life’s efforts to provide for the community, Roy says “the store serves as an outlet for local artists to display their art, jewelry and crafts, local musicians to have a venue to play and sell their CD’s, and clothes makers to sell their goods as well. We also open up the space for people to share their skills, like drumming classes and yoga.” All activities at Green Life are kid friendly. The center provides a children’s play space connecting food, fun and family - all important aspects of a healthy community.

The myriad of activities and food one can enjoy at Green Life can be had by using Community Currency. Green Life accepts $5 Community currency for every purchase over $10.

“Green life goes well with Community Currency. It’s all about connecting people and a community on a person-to-person level. Green Life promotes people coming together to share and help one another, and the community currency helps make these connections and strengthens us locally. It’s important to keep currency cycling through, supporting local businesses so they can continue to grow, despite larger outside businesses coming in that don’t share the same commitment to our community,” says Roy.

“Local businesses thrive in this area based on community consciousness. Our local currency can help take that to a new level. When you are using Community Currency, it’s like a piece of art in your hand, it really shifts the perspective to be more focused on the trading aspect of goods and services. Plus, for many, the Federal Reserve note can carry negative connotations, and so there is an added value to the local currency that it stays local and promotes community.”

So if you find yourself itching for good wholesome food, local arts and music, health and spiritual classes and a positive place to take your kids, come by the Green Life Evolution Center and don’t forget to bring your Community Currency!
