Signatures Verified - Local Control Goes Before Supes

EUREKA - This June Humboldt voters will decide if they support locally controlled elections.

Little more than one week ago, the Humboldt Coalition for Community Rig hts turned in 7,668 signatures to the Elections Office for the "Humboldt County Ordinance to Protect Our Right to Fair Elections and Local Democracy". In just six working d ays, the Elections Department verified the stack of petitions submitted and the Coalition was given notice that their petition has qualified for the ballot. This ordinance would prohibit non-local corporations from making financial contributions to Humboldt County elections.

"The simple fact that elections was able to verify a record breaking number of signatures, in a week, demonstrates what an organized effort this has been ," stated HCCR Campaign Manager, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap. "Our volunteers checked every petition before we submitted them and crossed out every single one that was filled out incorrectly. This Coalition has laid the ground work for a solid campaign and we expect a resounding victory come June."

The ballot initiative will now be brought before the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7 at the Courthouse. The supervisors have the option to place this issue before voters on the June 2006 ballot or pass the ordinance at the scheduled meeting. The Coalition wants Humboldt voters to decide. 

"Research shows that 78% of registered voters in Humboldt County believe that non-local corporate contributions threaten the integrity of our local elections." Sopoci-Belknap stated. "We have identified a very real problem and this initiative will help restore citizen confidence in the electoral process at the local level."
