Crawford Attacks Measure T While Calling for Unity
EUREKA - Those opposing Measure T (NOT) have come into the ring with
fists flying.
Last week prominent, conservative businessman Rob Arkley Jr. called
the measure "a hallmark of fascism" and called on county officials to "do
everything in their power to keep Measure T from ever becoming law." In
an interview with media this week, Chris Crawford, head of the Humboldt
Business Council and spokesperson for the NOT campaign, called Measure
T a "piece of shit" and demanded the proponents end their campaign and
work with him for a $500 limit on all contributions.
"I'm sure the hypocrisy of Crawford calling for us to all get along
while insulting us in the next breath is not lost on anyone," said Kaitlin
Sopoci-Belknap, Campaign Co-Manager for Measure T. "NOT has been campaigning
for just over a week and they've already demonstrated they intend to
run campaign based on name calling, lies and distortion. Let's have a
civil debate on the issue before the voters. Or does the NOT campaign
have to resort to name calling because they have no real arguments to
make their case?" she said.
The Measure T campaign intends to keep their course. The group has a
forum planned for this Tuesday, April 25, with John Bonifaz of the National
Voting Rights Institute as a featured speaker. "John is an award-winning
national expert on issues of campaign finance reform and a supporter
of Measure T," said Sopoci-Belknap. "We look forward to bringing the
public in on a conversation about the deeper issues of why Humboldt County
needs Measure T."
The forum will be at the Labor Temple in Eureka (840 E Street)
on Tuesday, April 25. It starts at 7:00pm and is free and open to the
public. Other speakers include Sopoci-Belknap and District Attorney Paul
Gallegos.
Both campaigns have been receiving a flurry of requests for debates
and forums. It seems clear that the two campaigns will be facing
off many times between now and June. "We're happy to discuss the real
issues, and we hope that the NOT campaign can keep the negative campaigning
to a minimum," said Sopoci-Belknap.
