THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

April/May 2006 Issue

Dear Humboldt Community,

Welcome to the April/May 2006 issue of the Humboldt Exchange directory!

This issue we are pleased to announce that two new businesses are accepting Community Currency: the Courthouse Cafe in Eureka and 100 Fires Books, online and in Manila.

The Courthouse Cafe is our first restaurant and our first Eureka business. 100 Fires Books is a great local treasure - a bookstore completely dedicated to selling social change books. Check out the ads from both of these new businesses in this directory, along with ads from all the other business accepting Community Currency -- we’re now up to six!

The big news this issue is that we are definitely moving forward with our quest to bring you $1 Community Currency bills! We’re opening up the design of the bills to our local artist community for a competition. We’re hoping for a winning design that is every bit as beautiful as the bills we already have.

Our theme for the new bills is “Local Democracy in Humboldt County.” Our personal preference is a design that focuses on Eureka (as the county seat) or the county as a whole. We’d like the bill to underscore that this is a county-wide community and a county-wide project.

We’re looking to you to help us raise funds for the purchase of the bills. Our penguin pledge drive for $1CC bills (penguins all jump into the water together, ya know) has already raised over $800! We need to raise a total of $3000 to purchase the bills.

For further details about the artist competition and what you can do to help bring $1CC bills into this world (even if you’re not an artist) see our ad on page ten.

As the weather warms, attendance at the pancake breakfasts grows. From now on there will be a focus on having a Community Currency bazaar at the breakfast. Remember to bring items to sell and extra CC to spend. If you would like to carpool to the breakfast from Arcata, meet at the Co-op kiosk at 9:30am.

You can now also buy bread from Solomon and pick it up at the Democracy Unlimited house (where our office is located) and Deanna’s farm-fresh, organic, free-range eggs are always on the porch for self-serve purchase!

The Humboldt Exchange is really taking off - you can purchase food, water, books, shoes and coffee (among other things) - all the basic necessities are covered!

Happy Spring from the Humboldt Exchange!

- In Each Other We Trust -

Yvonne, Kaitlin, Ryan, Heather, Sam and Tony

PS - A thank you shout out to Jim, our new distributor. We’re up to 4,000 papers distrbuted county-wide!
