August/September 2006 Issue
Summer
Greetings from the Collective!
Dear Humboldt Community,
Welcome to the August/September 2006 issue of the Humboldt Exchange!
Can it be August already? We hope you’ve been enjoying
the long days of summer, foggy and sunny alike.
Eggcitement at the Exchange! Thanks to a donation of a mini-fridge,
you can now use Community Currency to purchase local, free-range eggs
any day you like from the porch of Democracy Unlimited HQ. Deanna’s
gggs are $5 CC for two dozen delicious, Humboldt-grown eggs. If you only
need one dozen at a time, that’s okay – coupons are available
to allow you to pick up your second dozen later. The egg fridge is located
at 1402 M Street in Eureka, on the porch, and it holds as many eggs as
the chickens are laying. Come by for some eggs today!
Got Skillz? We’re excited to announce the second annual Democracy
Unlimited Skillshare, to be held September 23-24 in Eureka. A Skillshare
is a chance to teach and learn skills and ideas through workshops led
by and for members of our local community. Anyone is welcome to present
a workshop and the event is free to all participants. Last year, workshops
ranged from “Fix Yer Bike” to “Know Yer Rights” and
all sorts of useful topics in between. See the announcement on page four
or call 269-0984 for more info – we hope to see you there!
Take the Plunge! The Humboldt Exchange plans to print new $1
bills by the end of 2006, adding a whole new level of change to the
Community Currency project. We need your help to make it happen! You
can contribute in three ways:
1. Get creative. Like the fives, tens, twenties, and fifties
already in circulation, our $1 bills will be works of art. We’re
seeking artists to design the new bills with colorful creations that
honor democracy in Humboldt County. Interested? See the announcement
on page ten for details.
2. Sign up for our “Penguin Pledge”. Pledge to contribute
$20 to the costs of printing. Like penguins, we’ll all jump in
together when we hit the $2000 mark needed to print the $1 bills. So
far, we’ve collected over $1000 in pledges – only 40 more
people will bring us to our goal. Join us!
3. Spread the word. Ask your friends to make a Penguin Pledge
with you. Encourage your favorite artist – whether she’s five or fifty – to
submit a design for the $1 bill. We can’t wait to release a new
Community Currency bill, and talking to others will build support and
anticipation.
And that’s not all. Don’t forget our monthly Pancake Breakfasts
(see page 11), the growing number of local businesses accepting Community
Currency, and the incredible goods and services you’ll find on
the pages ahead. The Humboldt Exchange is proud to support our community
through our work to nourish a local economy. We hope you find value in
our publications, events, and projects. Please don’t hesitate to
contact us with questions, suggestions, or to volunteer for any of our
projects. We’d love to hear from you!
In each other we trust!
