THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

August 2004 Issue

Dear Humboldt Community,

Welcome to the second issue of the Humboldt Exchange! We hope that you’re as pleased as we are to see the growth of listings this month. Due to some great press from the Times-Standard and KMUD radio, we’ve had a number of requests for information from community members who didn’t know about the Community Currency before and a number of new people are listing this month.

We’ve also had a number of our distribution spots tell us that the directory flew out faster than any other month. Halfway through July we were almost out of papers and so this month we have printed more. If you can help with distribution, we would greatly appreciate it. The areas where we could use the most help include: Orick, Trinidad, McKinleyville, Blue Lake, Fortuna, Rio Dell, Garberville/Redway, Willow Creek, and other outlying areas of the county. But we’d appreciate help anywhere. Please contact us if you can lend a hand.

If you ever cannot find a copy of the directory, you can always stop by our office and pick one up. There is always a stack on the porch. We’re at 1402 “M” Street, Eureka (corner of “M” & 14th). From now on you will be able to check out the directory listings online at our new website: www.humboldtexchange.org. We will archive old directory listings there as well.
We haven’t yet worked out a system that allows you to enter your listings and pay online - but it is in the works and we are hoping to be ready with that service soon.

Now that we have a handle on the process of putting out the directory and the filing system, we’re beginning to tackle the question of how to involve more local businesses in the project. We’re working on developing a packet of information for businesses about other local currency models that involve business participation so that we can collectively determine how to adapt our Humboldt model to serve the business community. Some businesses are approaching us and expressing interest in getting involved and local customers have indicated a desire for this as well. Since we’re here to serve you, this is a direction we are earnestly exploring. If you have ideas about this, we’d love to hear them.

As a collective, it has been inspiring and heartening to receive such a warm welcome to working on this project. It has been especially rewarding to hear participants tell us that beyond liking the look of the directory and the new level of organization of the project, they have had more exchanges this month than ever before. In light of the many people who shared this with us, we’re planning to add a new feature next month that lists examples and stories of successful exchanges. We feel it is important to share stories of how our community members are using the currency. We’d love to hear from you, and share your stories with the rest of the community.

For example, a few of the successes that we heard about in July included:

• Mike sold a few pounds of his home grown organic garlic for five dollars Community Currency and three dollars in US treasury notes.

• Jared had a fulfilling spiritual consultation and tarot reading about a project he is working on.

• Kaitlin sold a cat scratching post for five dollars Community Currency.

• Squiggy sold some of her herb starts (all of them in fact!)

• Ryan took three orders for his home-made ginger ale and sold a laptop computer for $300 ($150 Community
Currency/$150 US treasury notes.)

• Fred bought a full bag of home-grown organic produce for $20 community currency.

• Mneesha sold a microphone for $50 Community Currency and $50 US treasury notes.

• Heather went to two Placebo shows and paid $5 Community Currency for each one. She also had a bunch of people call to make appointments for massages, yard work, and use of her truck.
Lastly, we just want to remind you of a few things:

• Unless you tell us, we won’t rerun your listings from one month to the next. If you want to resubmit the same listings, please let us know by the 15th of the month (and don’t forget to send your payment). If you are fairly certain you will want to run the same listings for more than one month, we are happy to accept listings and payment for several months at a time. We’ll still send you your Community Currency each month along with the Exchange directory and you won’t have to worry about remembering to get your listing in on time. We’re exploring the idea of offering a discount for folks who list and pay upfront for several months at a time.

• We happily accept submissions throughout the month. Please do not feel you should wait until the week of the 15th to send in your submissions. It really helps us out if you can send your listings to us earlier, so that we can have a smoother layout process. We know that everyone is busy, but if you are able to send in listings early, we will greatly appreciate it!

• Don’t forget to spend your Community Currency! It is wonderful to have a thorough and exciting directory every month, but it is also important to utilize what is offered and get the Community Currency circulating. We hope that the new feature of indicating when folks will accept all currency will help inspire more exchanges. Make use of the skills and talents our fellow community members have to offer!

• We’re always happy to accept donations. Especially right now when we’re working to pay off our debt for the cost of printing the Community Currency and old directory printing costs. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation you can do so by making a check out to the CA Center for Community Democracy. (The CA Center is the fiscal sponsor for Democracy Unlimited.) Tax-deductible donations are only possible for donations over $50.

Thanks again for all your support keeping this project going strong.

In Each Other We Trust!

Yours truly,
The Humboldt Community Currency Collective
