Directory: |
December 2004 / January 2005Greetings Humboldt County, All of us working in the Humboldt Exchange Collective are continually inspired by the stories and experiences which have resulted from the Community Currency Directory. This project has facilitated additional income and work for many of us in our community. It has introduced folks to new projects and hobbies and has given all of us an opportunity to discover the skills of friends and neighbors. This fifth issue of the Humboldt Exchange is our Holiday/New Years issue. For this season all of us in the collective are making a holiday wish to support our community making every effort to buy holiday gifts locally. We would also like to suggest purchasing a proof sheet of Humboldt Community Currency to give to family and friends as a holiday gift. What a great way to start off the holiday season, and support the continued success of the project. Thank you to all who support the Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Project. We can look to the successful exchanges of those using Community Currency for inspiration, so here are a few stories which resulted from the past October/November issue: • Carlisle accepted currency for massages and spent some of it on yard work. Over the last couple of months, we have been busy with “behind the scenes” efforts, taking suggestions from those involved in the project, and gauging where we need to focus our energies. Our aims are to keep the project expanding and continuing to better serve the needs of Humboldt County. To this end, we sat down for a couple of long weekend meetings to brainstorm where the project may go in the upcoming months and ultimately, the next few years. We came up with a few areas where we felt we could improve in the basic structure of publishing the directory. These include: have more people listing with more diverse listings, have more businesses start taking currency in someway, and broaden the base of people who are making the project happen. We also came up with some specific goals we would like to accomplish beyond what we are doing right now. Some of these goals are: to start a grant giving project, hold a community event and/or a trading bazaar where goods and currency can be freely exchanged, and print one “dollar” bills. Of course, such planning is an ever-evolving process and we would love to hear more of your suggestions. As always, you are welcome to call, e-mail or stop by during office hours (Monday evening from 6-8:30 at the Democracy Unlimited office in Eureka). Please contact us if you would like to volunteer your time, talent and enthusiasm toward making these projects happen. In terms of volunteering, one area where help is greatly needed is distribution. Even distributing the directory to just two spots each month would be wonderful, so please let us know if you can help out. As you may know we went to a bi-monthly directory starting with the October/November issue. Therefore, the deadline for the next issue (February/March) will be January 15th. We hope to see Humboldt County’s Community Currency expanding and flourishing in 2005, so we encourage everyone to get involved and find out how this project can serve our local needs. And remember to continue making calls to our community members to make use of all the goods and services in the directory.
