February/March 2007 Issue
Greetings,
Humboldt community!
Welcome to the February-March 2007 issue of the Humboldt Exchange Community
Currency Directory. Inside you’ll find a wealth of resources and
news to connect you with others in our community as we build a stronger
local economy in Humboldt County.
This month, we are excited to announce two new businesses accepting Community
Currency. First, for sweet tooth types, visit Grandma B’s
Fudge on the Arcata Plaza. Grandma B’s is accepting 10%
Community Currency and $5 Community Currency on all purchases over $20.
We just found out that Bongo Boy music in McKinleyville
– a longtime advertiser with the Humboldt Exchange – has been
accepting up to 20% Community Currency on all purchases for quite some
time. So if you didn’t know that either, make sure to bring Community
Currency next time you have a CD or DVD remastered at Bongo Boy.
And if you know of a business that accepts Community Currency, but isn’t
listed in our pages, let us know! We are excited to see this project catching
on and want to make sure that every issue we offer a complete list of
places to use our beautiful bills.
Thanks to everyone who made the December Pancake Breakfast and Cookie
Swap a great success! We have never served so many pancakes, and we’re
looking forward to resuming pancake breakfasts in March. Please contact
us in late February for details – we haven’t set the location
yet, but we’ll know by then.
Last, since Valentine’s Day arrives in February (whether you’re
excited about that or not), we thought we’d offer a little suggestion
for how give a little love to our local community. These ideas are good
all year – so if you’ve already got plans for V-Day, you can
save them for later.
Ten Ways to Celebrate Love and Support Your Local Bioregion...
1. Check out a show by a local band. Humboldt music
is always playing somewhere in the county and you can support local
musicians with your cover at the show.
2. Adopt a pet from the shelter. Maybe not the most
spontaneous activity – be sure you’re ready – but
a great way to bring a little love into both your life and theirs!
3. Pick daffodils. Why buy flowers grown in Colombia
with lots of pesticides? Daffodils should start bloomin’ soon,
they’re not native, and they’re plentiful.
4. Buy art. Just as with music, Humboldt
has a great number of folks who create local art. Make your world more
beautiful with a community member’s painting!
5. Cook a seasonal meal. Figure out what’s growing
now (hint: it might be chard) and cook up a fresh-picked, bioregional
menu for your friends. Yum!
6. Read a book together. Get thee to a local bookstore
and find something that’s fun to read out loud, and then talk
about it. Feed your brain.
7. Plant a garden. Okay, this might have to wait until
March, but St. Patty’s Day is a great for planting potatoes and
like a pet, plants give you love! And possible nourishment, if you plant
vegetables.
8. Learn a new skill. Take a class or find a mentor
in something you’ve always wanted to try – take some time
for yourself and see what happens!
9. Go for a bike ride. Whether you explore the hills
or just your neighborhood, get outside for a breath of fresh air and
a healthy way to enjoy our bioregion.
10. Play Scrabble. You can’t do it alone –
so find some folks and some tiles and spell out what you love (extra
points if you love something like “XYLEM”).
There are many more ways to support your local bioregion in the pages
that follow. And you can always list your own – the deadline for
the April-May 2007 issue is March 15. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the
Humboldt Exchange!
In each other we trust,
Kaitlin, Yvonne, Mike, Sam, Shannon, Hannah, and Jared
