THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

July 2004 Issue

Community Currency Gets a New Face!

Hello Humboldt Community,

Welcome to the first issue of the Humboldt Exchange! This letter comes to you from the eight folks who have taken on the task of coordinating the Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Project. This is the first in a series of articles that will be printed in this section of the directory. Here we will share information on the topic of currencies, as well as related stories. We will rotate authorship, but this first one comes from all of us, and is an introduction to the new face of the project.

Some of you may already be aware that social-change activist Fhyre Phoenix put a lot of hard work into a previous incarnation of Community Currency Project, and has now passed on the concepts and physical assets of that project to our collective. We are looking forward to working with you all to continuously improve upon the model he gave us.

Part of this process is general housekeeping; our first goal has been to get organized, and address previous logistical problems. We have been busy contacting everyone who has used community currency, and making sure that we have up-to-date complete contact information and participation records. If you have listed in the directory before, and we have not already contacted you please let us know.

Our Goals...
We took this project on, because we recognize its potential for increasing economic independence in Humboldt County. By working diligently, encouraging a culture of input and participation, and running the project in a democratic and transparent manner we are confident that the Community Currency Project will reach its full potential.

We want this directory to be a user-friendly tool with which you can supplement your income by offering services and goods, and get in touch with people offering the goods and services you need.

There are many different models for local currencies. We see it basically as a way to meet our needs in a socially-just manner, while strengthening the local economy. We are a talented and resourceful community with valuable skills and offerings to exchange. The format of this currency is not static, and we will make sure that there are opportunities to inform and inspire one another by way of articles, community forums, etc.

We appreciate suggestions and insights on how community currency can be made more useful and better integrated into our community. One way we can share our experiences is in a feature column that will be in future issues. Please let us know how this project is working for you, so that we can all benefit from your story of exchange.

Our group process is democratic and transparent. We use consensus process to make decisions, and keep a binder of meeting minutes available for your perusal. The binder is located at the currency office, which is open to all Monday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

What's New...
We would like to keep you apprised of what is going on with the project, as there have been some structural changes. First and foremost, the Community Currency Project is no longer a business, but is non-profit, and a project of Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County (DUHC). The name of the listing publication is now the Humboldt Exchange. We feel that this name better reflects the purpose of the listing service - facilitating community exchanges.

While we tried not to make too many changes to the project in the first month, those of you familiar with the prior incarnation of the Community Currency Project will notice some differences.

We suggest that everyone accept half federal money and half community currency for all transactions initiated through this paper whether offering goods or services (instead of the prior 3/4 to 1/4 ratio for goods). We also encourage anyone who wishes to accept full currency to feel free to do so.

The first month that someone signs up they will receive $85 in community currency. Every subsequent month they will get $35 in community currency. We also remind you one of the best ways to earn currency is through an. exchange.

Those people interested in other means of acquiring currency (and supporting the project) may purchase it at face value with U.S. treasury notes.

Future Changes...
We are looking forward to several other changes:

In the next issue we plan to have a symbol to mark listings for which people are willing to accept all community currency - and a place on the submission form for this to be denoted.

We look forward to accepting community currency as payment for listing in the Exchange. We feel this will mark an important step for the Community Currency Project. Not only will it add value to the currency, but also it will allow us to get it back into circulation. However, along with inheriting this project, we also inherited some debt. At this point the Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Project has a debt of $4000 for the cost of printing the currency, in addition to $1000 owed to the printer for back issues. When we have paid these debts we will be able to start accepting community currency as part payment for listing in the Humboldt Exchange.

In future issues of the Humboldt Exchange, there will be a section devoted to the financial status of the project. Our goal is to increase transparency in our process and to encourage community understanding of the financial challenges that may impact our decisions.

We hope to expand our use of our web page as a means of publishing listings and possibly in the future have the ability to accept new listing submissions on-line.

In Closing...
We hope that you enjoy and utilize this first issue that we have put together. We want to thank those of you who are listing again, as well as those who are listing for the first time. It is your participation that makes this project work. Please get involved and be a part of making this community currency as vibrant as we know it can be.

Sincerely,

Heather Ault, Mark Avcollie, Hannah Clapsadle, Yvonne Doble, Ryan Emenaker, Heather Meader-McCausland, Squiggy E. Rubio-Hale, and Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap
