THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

June/July 2007

Greetings, Humboldt Community!

Welcome to the June/July 2007 issue of the Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Directory. Inside you’ll find a wealth of resources and news to connect you with others in our community. Join us as we work to build a stronger local economy in Humboldt County.

Highlights this issue:

New Businesses in June/July
• Chapala Restaurant in Old Town Eureka will accept up to 10% Community Currency on all purchases. Now serving delicious Mexican meals for lunch and dinner seven days a week – to which we say, olé!
• Arcata and McKinleyville Florist also welcomes up to 10% Community Currency on purchases. Fathers Day? Prom? Graduation? Whatever the occasion, use Community Currency to honor that special someone.
• Kyana Taillon – Photographer will capture your special event, family portrait, or wedding with style and creativity for 10% Community Currency. Remember your meaningful moments in Humboldt County with community-based photography!
• Still coming soon: The Northcoast Environmental Center will be accepting Community Currency when they have completed their move to Northtown Arcata. We wish them well in their new location – and if you want to help haul stuff up the hill, call 822-6918 to volunteer.
• Where do you want to shop? Let us know where you want to spend Community Currency and we’ll send a business packet of information right away.

Got Skills?
It’s time for the Third Annual SkillShare!! Democracy Unlimited and the Humboldt Exchange invite you to share your talents and learn some new ones on Saturday, July 21 at the Labor Temple in Eureka. Join us for a full day of free workshops – presented by all kinds of skillful community members – that will improve your life in fun and perhaps unexpected ways. Want to know how to fix your socks? Save seeds? Facilitate a meeting? Come to the Skill Share and learn something new. For more information or to offer a workshop, call us at 269-0984.

Pancakes and Possibilities
You can learn more about the Skill Share, purchase locally-raised duck eggs with Community Currency, sell or publicize your own crafts and services, and meet wonderful people at the monthly Pancake Breakfast! Get in on the fun – and the food – on the third Sunday of every month from 10am-noon in Eureka. Just $5 Community Currency for all the pancakes you can eat! You can also stick around for our “How To Use The Humboldt Exchange” workshop from 12:30-1:30pm, a great way to get answers to your questions about Community Currency, the Directory, and more. The next two Pancake Breakfasts and workshops are Sunday, June 17 and Sunday, July 15.

Show Me The Money
The Humboldt Exchange Community Currency project currently has $112,874 in circulation. As you may have noticed, we recently cut back on the amount of currency that we are releasing via membership allotment. Starting this issue, first-time listers receive $86 – one each of the $50, $20, $10, $5, and $1 – to enable them to get involved in the Exchange right away. Repeat listers now receive $16 – one each of the $10, $5, and $1 bills. Controlling of how much currency is released is one tool that can be used to help maintain the stability of a financial system.

The method we use to gauge how much currency to release into the community is very similar to how the Federal Reserve makes this decision. The Federal Reserve keeps tabs on currency flows, and helps banks meet demand for U.S. currency. Likewise, we at the Humboldt Exchange keep track of how much currency is released. We have found that people are currently getting more than they can spend, so for balancing purposes we are reducing our distribution. (This method comes to us from the folks at Ithaca HOURS, a well-established local currency project in upstate New York.) If you have any questions on this topic or any other Humboldt Exchange policies, feel free to contact us.

Or Better Yet, Get Involved!
Come to one of our open meetings, held the last Monday of every month at 7pm. At these meetings we have a discussion circle about the workings of Community Currency, and we have fun answering one another’s questions, and generating ideas. The next two meetings are Monday, June 25 and Monday, July 30.

We wish you a happy solstice and hope you take advantage of the longer days to celebrate our amazing community! Thanks for reading, and happy exchanging...

In each other we trust!
