THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

October/November 2004 Issue

Greetings Humboldt County,

As the weather begins changing, you may notice we have decided to make a significant change in this directory. For the next six months, we will be publishing the Humboldt Exchange every other month. This means the issues will be run for two months at a time (The current issue being October/November).

The number one reason we are moving to this schedule is because is was suggested by many people who regularly place listings. We also noticed that many were simply choosing to re-run their same listings month-to-month, and some people told us it was a challenge to come up with new listings within two weeks of the previous directory coming out.

With all of these reasons to switch, you may wonder why we have said that it will only be for the next six months. We decided we need to assess how the change in structure is working for all participating and felt that six months would be a good amount of time to get a sense of that. We want to make sure this project is truly serving the community, and we will be striving to get feedback from you in order to make that assessment.

The deadlines for the next two issues will be: November 15th for the December/January issue, and January 15th for the February/March issue.

This change in schedule will give the members of the collective an opportunity to be much more active in pursuit of projects and suggestions to improve how our Community Currency works. One of our primary goals is to help participants meet their basic needs through using Community Currency. To this end, we will be doing outreach to local businesses and individuals who provide skilled services. If you have any suggestions of people to contact, we would welcome your input.

We also will be working on ways to help build the sense of community between those using Community Currency and this directory. One of our ideas is to create a bazaar or crafts fair-style gathering, where participants will be able to gather together and exchange ideas as well as goods.

We apologize for the delay in activating the online form. This was announced to be available for the October directory, but instead will be ready in time for the December/November issue.

Once again, we love to hear about Community Currency exchanges and creative ways that folks in the community are beginning to integrate Community Currency into their lives. We encourage all to send in their stories so they can be included in future Humboldt Exchange issues. These exchange stories can be a bridge to bring more people to the project, therefore creating a greater diversity in what is offered.

This past month’s exchanges:

• Lia was able to use Community Currency at a local crafts fair.

• Cat paid for a haircut from someone who was not listed in the directory, but who is now excited to get involved.

• Ryan acquired a motorcycle helmet from a man who needed a hair cut, so Ryan paid Squiggy $5 Community Currency and $5 US cash to provide him with a hair cut.

• Mark got computer help with his Macintosh and a haircut from Squiggy.

• The Tenants Union had a filing system created for them, and has been contacted by two eager grant writers.

Thank you again to everyone who participates in this directory and who supports the currency. We appreciate your willingness to make the Community Currency Project your own, and sharing your experiences and suggestions with us. We hope you find that we listen well.

And thank you to our photo participants in this issue. We hope you all enjoy seeing our community members at work.

In Each Other We Trust,

Heather, Mike, Yvonne, Ryan, Heather, Squiggy, and Kaitlin
