THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

October/November 2008

Greetings, Humboldt County Community!

Greetings, Humboldt County!

Ever wonder what a community is? Many view community as a social group whose members reside in a specific location and/or share common characteristics or interests.

Here at the Humboldt Exchange, we believe that there is more to it, something deeper that has been lost in translation. The origin of the word “community” comes from the Latin root “munus,” which means “give” or “exchange,” and “com,” which means “together.” So literally, community means those who give amongst each other.

We thus see community as a system of support, a network of individuals who work together to ensure one another’s prosperity.

Here in Humboldt County, we have a significant number of folks that hold educational and skill backgrounds beyond what is necessary for their primary employment. The Humboldt Exchange provides a means of advertising and facilitating the exchanges of our latent talents, presenting another opportunity for us to support one another.

The beauty of an exchange is that it connects people. People are brought together over common ground, identify with one another, and build relationships. Community building is a passion of ours, and thankfully, there are many ways to encourage these constructive personal interactions.

In that spirit, we will be cosponsoring a Contra Dance with the Folklife Society this November 7th from 7 to 11p.m. at the Arcata Veterans Hall. Like a combination of swing and square dancing, a contra dance is a fun and uplifting dance to lively folk music. Participants interact with and experience one another in a unique and bonding way, creating a comfortable environment for relationships to grow and deepen.

So we invite you to be a part of the Humboldt Exchange community! Come join us for a night of dancing, conversation, and friendship at the Contra Dance. Meet and support your neighbors by flipping through these pages to discover what they have to offer and are searching for. Learn how you can help strengthen the Humboldt Exchange by attending our monthly meetings or gatherings.

And of course, give amongst each other!
