THE COMMUNITY CURRENCY DIRECTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

September 2004 Issue

Dear Humboldt Community,

Welcome to the third issue of the Humboldt Exchange.

Thank you to everyone participating in this project, and listing in the directory -- it wouldn’t exist without you! It’s really nice to be a part of this project as it takes shape and to see people using Community Currency. Each month, we hope you find this letter useful as we try to keep you updated on what’s new, as well as provide folks with some general information about the Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Project.

It appears that people are enjoying the use of the smiley face symbol to show who is willing to accept all Community Currency. We have heard from several people who are excited about being able to use their Community Currency to acquire services they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford.

What’s New?
We have created a section entitled "FAQ" (Frequently Asked Questions) where we will try to answer many questions that people ask about community currency in general and about this community currency project. We will try to address one question in-depth each month. If you have a suggestion for a question, please let us know!

You may notice that we’ve made some changes to how the policy sections read (without really changing the policies). We also have added a policy section regarding personal responsibility in listing. We have included a few suggestions for basic precautions while making exchanges with other people through this directory - we want all exchanges to be safe and positive.
Hannah Clapsadle will be taking a break from this project in order to concentrate her energy on finishing school. It has been a pleasure working with her, and we wish her the best. We look forward to working with her more when she again has the time to volunteer with the Humboldt Exchange.

Want to Help?

We would really like to encourage people to help us by volunteering. All of the collective members volunteer our time spent on this project. Help, even a couple hours once a month, would be great. Some of things we could use help with are data entry, directory distribution, and mailings. We are working on developing easy ways for volunteers to get involved. Please call us if you are interested in volunteering for any of these tasks.

If you don’t have the time to volunteer, donations are happily accepted. As mentioned in the July and August letter, this project has some debt for the initial cost of printing the currency bills. Donations of over $50 US are tax deductible. If you need a tax deduction, checks should be made out to the CA Center for Community Democracy (this is the fiscal sponsor for Democracy Unlimited, the host organization for the Community Currency Project).

Coming Soon…
Next month you can look forward to the Humboldt Exchange accepting listings and payments through an online form on our web site at www.humboldtexchange.org. There will be a small additional processing fee, to cover the cost for the on-line payment account, but otherwise it will be very similar to the paper form. We also would love more feedback about our website as a whole, which includes current and past issues of all directories.
As mentioned in the August letter from the collective, we are working to find ways to involve more local businesses in this project. One step towards this is our business information packet. We hope to have this business packet ready in the next few months, it will include models of how other communities have incorporated businesses into the community currency project, as well as an overview of how community currency works.

Recent Exchange Stories

We want to encourage everyone to be creative in your exchanges and spend Community Currency. It is important to get the currency circulating and give each other the chance to do some of the work we really like doing or sell some of our extra stuff. We think it's inspiring to hear about successful exchanges -- if you don't mind sharing, we'd love to hear about yours!

Some highlights of recent exchanges include:

• Squiggy cut hair for six people for $5 in Community Currency and $5 in US Currency each.

• Ryan sold several more orders of ginger ale.

• Fred bought a laptop computer and accordion lessons. She was also able to use Community Currency at a yard sale.

• Heather sold an air mattress for $5 in Community Currency and $5 US Currency. She also did a massage for $25 in Community Currency and $25 US money.

• Yvonne helped Kaitlin get past writer's block and into two first drafts in exchange for Community Currency, US currency and some veggies.

• Democracy Unlimited was able to hire a writer/editor who will accept all Community Currency to help them with an upcoming article.

• Paul has received a lot of business for his gardening and landscaping offerings, and has already more than covered his costs to advertise.

Once again, we want to remind you that you can submit listings anytime throughout the month -- there is no need to wait until the 15th. If you know that you want to run the same ad for more than one month we are happy to accept listings and payment for several months at a time. This way you won’t have to remember to send them in each month. If you want to run repeat listings, please let us know as soon as possible.

Thanks again for all the support, and making this project work.

In Each Other We Trust,
The Humboldt Exchange Community Currency Collective
